An Inclusive, Self-Aware, Social and Emotional Learning Approach
Based in New York, Janina Casey maintains a strong community presence. As a board member of nonprofit Urban Tech, Janina Casey assists in efforts to integrate technology into schools through a module-based learning platform that fosters academic and personal achievement among students in less privileged communities.
At the foundation of the Urban Tech approach is a focus on social and emotional learning (SEL), which is designed to accommodate students from multilingual and multicultural backgrounds. One core emphasis is on the development of self-awareness, which encompasses personal goals, values, and an accurate assessment of a student’s own limitations and skills. The goal is to bridge the often considerable gaps between actions, thoughts, and emotions in ways that are positive and self-reflective.
Self-awareness is complemented by social awareness, which encourages empathy and compassion for those with different backgrounds. Self-awareness also focuses on shared values that smooth everyday interactions and allow teamwork to foster.
