A classic 1959 Billy Wilder cinematic vehicle starring Jack Lemmon and Marilyn Monroe, “Some Like It Hot,” was adapted for the Broadway musical stage in 2022. The action occurs in Prohibition-era Chicago, with a pair of musicians witnessing a mafia hit and needing to make a rapid escape. The hot-footed musicians ultimately find a way out of their dilemma by dressing up as members of an all-girl band and escaping with their identities intact.
The new Broadway production has received positive reviews for its upbeat big-band soundtrack, which extends beyond the handful of songs included in the original movie, such as the Monroe-sung “You Wanna love me.” The musical retains the original movie’s sense of buoyancy and fun while offering a setting in the twenties that enhances its jazz-age flair. “Some Like It Hot” also celebrates nonconformity and the unique value of marching to one’s tune.
